I can tell you first hand that worry impacts the way life is lived. Worry is on the rise in our stressed out-busy-pressured world. A negative side to the advent of technology is how it conditions individuals to be obsessed with what’s happening . . . within the very moment it happened . . . in every space of the world. Instead of getting the full story, we receive headlines created to elicit worry which produces the desire to find out more.
In the process, worry increases, creating a sense that everything is out of our realm of control.
Worry is an obstacle—a boulder— blocking us from the peace God has said will be given to us. Matthew 6:25-34 records Jesus making it clear that worry does not add anything to life. Medical science has proven that worry shortens our life, stressing the mind, body, and soul.
So. What can be done?
Philippians 4:6 says not to worry about anything and to pray about everything. It’s clear: Worry is not to exist in our life.
It’s a continual process to release the habit of worry.
Pastor Chuck Higgins, an eighty-something year old pastor I served with, gave the best advice about worry: RELAX . . . GOD . . . IS . . . IN . . . CONTROL.
These words are helpful, healing, and worth repeating. I’ve made it a prayer: “God, I will relax, you are in control.”
