This last season of my life has had many defining moments. No one escapes having these kind of moments; however, most of us try to avoid them. I’m talking about the kind of moments that are extremely challenging, the kind that will change you either for good or for bad, depending on your response.

It’s a choice to see these life situations as an opportunity to go forward, intentionally anticipating God to make a way through it all.  This choice requires the strength to refuse to give power to the challenges and difficulties and the belief all things will work out together for good.

The Old Testament records the story of the ancient leader, Joshua, chosen to lead the people into the Promised Land.  At first glance we might not see it; however, the first chapter of the book of Joshua describes one of those defining moments—his leader, Moses died.    Joshua made the choice to focus on what was in front of him rather than on what was behind him, setting his mind on what God said to do, pushing forward.

Most likely Joshua was not only dealing with immense grief but an internal struggle, wondering how he could possibly fill the job Moses had had for so many years.

From the outside, it seemed he had failed at leading forty years before when he was unable to convince the people to step into the Promised Land despite the “giants”  seen in the land.

When you get down to it, Joshua had the choice to be weighed down by discouragement from personal grief and fear from failure or to push forward focused on the God-word:

This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9, NLT).

The choice to push forward is the catalyst to an amazing story of what happened next.

The thing is . . . Joshua choice to push forward with strength and courage . . . teaches the lesson to refuse fear and discouragement to be the leader of our life.
